Six of Pentacles Tarot Meaning: Giving and Receiving

At lunch, your friend reaches for her wallet and hesitates. Money has been tight for her since spring. So you slide the check to your side and say: My turn. Two weeks ago she drove you to the airport at five in the morning.

The Six of Pentacles on the original by Pamela Colman Smith, 1909: a merchant holds a scale and drops coins into the hands of two kneeling people.

What the Six of Pentacles shows

Watch where the coins are going, and who is holding the scale.

  • The merchant with the scale: In one hand he holds a balance, perfectly level. He gives what is fair, not what is showy.
  • The coins falling from his other hand: He gives with an open palm. Help given freely feels different from help with strings attached.
  • The two kneeling people: One receives, one still waits. Sometimes you are on one side, sometimes on the other.
  • The six coins above: They float over everyone in the scene, as if to say there is enough to go around.

The meaning of the Six of Pentacles

The Six of Pentacles means giving and receiving. Right now you are getting support, or you are the one offering it. Someone might lend you money, or you help out a friend who is struggling. The key words are generosity, give and take, support and fairness.

Six is the number of harmony and exchange. After the hard winter of the Five, this Earth card puts a warm meal back on the table.

As a yes or no card, it gives a friendly yes, especially if you have asked for help or support.

In its shadow, giving comes with conditions, or you make yourself dependent on someone else’s kindness. Check gently: Am I giving to help, or to be needed?

The Six of Pentacles in your love life

If you are single

Watch how someone treats the server at a restaurant, or whether they remember what you told them last week. Generosity in the little things shows you a lot about a person’s heart.

In a relationship

Give and take should feel roughly even. If you always plan the dates and remember the birthdays, say so, kindly and clearly. If your partner carries more right now, a simple thank you goes far.

After a breakup

Maybe you gave more than you got. That makes you generous, not foolish. Next time, notice early whether the other person gives back, and for now let others give to you.

In soul connections

A soulmate relationship feels like this card at its best: both of you give, both of you receive, and nobody keeps score. In a karmic bond, the scale is often tipped to one side. You will find more about that imbalance in karmic relationships.

Who, when, work and money

As a person: someone generous who helps without fuss, brings soup when you are sick and quietly wishes someone would look after them too.

As timing: soon. A balance is on its way.

At work: support from a mentor, fair pay, a grant or a bonus. If you are the boss, it is a good time to share.

With money: money may come through support, a refund or a fair deal. Pay back what you owe, so the scale stays level. Giving from real abundance belongs to the King of Pentacles.

Combinations with the Six of Pentacles

  • Six of Pentacles and Two of Cups: A love where both give equally.
  • Six of Pentacles and Seven of Swords: Look closely: is the deal really fair?
  • Six of Pentacles and Ten of Cups: A home where everyone feels looked after.

Questions about the Six of Pentacles

Yes, a friendly one. Support is there, and things can be balanced fairly.

It can: support, a loan, a gift or fair payment. Accept it without shame.

Look at your own scale this week. Where are you giving more than you can? Where could you let someone give to you? Both sides of the hand are part of love.

Outside the restaurant your friend hugs you a little longer than usual. On the drive home you realize it was never about the lunch. It was about knowing you both show up for each other.
