Strength Tarot Card: Meaning in Love, Feelings and Yes or No

The meeting with your boss is getting tense. You feel the heat rising in your face, and words you would regret are already on your tongue. Then you take one slow breath, lower your voice and say what you need to say. The room changes. That quiet power is what the Strength card is about.

At a glance
  • Strength stands for inner power, courage and patience.
  • In love, warmth and patience bring you further than pressure.
  • To a yes or no question, Strength answers with a calm, steady yes.
  • Its timing asks for endurance, often a few weeks.
  • Stay calm and keep going.

What the picture of Strength teaches

  • The woman and the lion: She touches the lion’s mouth, but she isn’t fighting it. She tames it with gentleness. Your wild feelings don’t need to be beaten, only calmed.
  • The lion: Golden, powerful, a little wild. It’s your anger, your fear, your desire, all the big feelings that can take over.
  • The infinity sign: Above her head floats the same sideways eight as with the Magician. Her strength never runs out because it doesn’t come from force.
  • The white dress: Clean and simple. Her power comes from a pure heart.
  • The garland of flowers: Flowers wind around her waist and through her hair, and the lion wears them too. Softness connects the two.
  • The blue mountain: In the distance a peak. There is still a way to go, and you can manage it.

What the Strength card means

Strength is the card of inner power. You are stronger than you feel right now. This strength is quiet, not loud. It shows when you stay calm with a crying child at the doctor’s office or when you keep going on a hard day without complaining to everyone. With calm, you manage what scares you.

Its key words are inner strength, courage, patience and calm. The card carries the number eight, and in many older decks it trades places with Justice, so some decks number it eleven. Its element is fire, a warm fire that glows rather than burns. To a yes or no question, Strength says yes, steady and patient. Right before it comes the Chariot, strength in motion, while here strength sits still and holds.

Its shadow side: you are too hard on yourself and expect too much. Even strong people are allowed to be tired.

Strength in love

In love, Strength reminds you that tenderness is a form of power.

If you’re single

Let yourself be seen gently. You don’t need to impress anyone or hide your softer side. The right person will feel safe with you because you are at peace with yourself.

If you’re in a relationship

Patience and warmth do more than pressure now. If there is a conflict, a soft voice helps both of you hear each other. Strong feelings may come up, jealousy, longing, fear, and they don’t have to rule you.

After a breakup

After a breakup, Strength sits with you through the long evenings. You don’t have to fight your feelings. Let them come, breathe through them and let them pass. That isn’t weakness, it’s the bravest thing you can do. Letting go, the way I understand it, is allowing what you feel instead of pushing it away.

In soul connections

With a twin flame, Strength speaks of a fire that can scare you, and of the courage to stay calm inside it. With a soulmate, it shows a love where each person makes the other stronger. In a karmic bond, it gives you the strength to stand up for yourself without anger. If you are wondering whether you have found your soulmate, my article on soulmate signs may help.

Strength as a person, as time, at work and with money

As a person: strong, patient and gentle. They never need to raise their voice to be heard. They love with a lot of warmth and understanding, and they are often stricter with themselves than they need to be.

As timing: with endurance, weeks rather than days.

At work: you handle a difficult situation with a steady hand. Keep going, you will get through it on your own strength.

With money: patience pays. Calm choices bring better results.

Strength alongside other cards

  • Strength and the Queen of Wands: Warm confidence. You shine without trying.
  • Strength and the Nine of Wands: You are tired, but almost there. Hold on a little longer.
  • Strength and the Lovers: A love that grows strong through patience.
  • Strength and the Hermit: Quiet inner growth. You become stronger in your own company.
  • Strength and the Ten of Swords: Even after a low point, you find your strength again.

Frequently asked questions about Strength

Is Strength a yes card?

Yes. Strength gives a calm yes and says you can manage this, especially with patience.

What does the Strength card mean in love?

It stands for patience, warmth and a love that grows strong through gentleness. Pressure won’t help, but kindness will.

Why is Strength sometimes number 8 and sometimes 11?

In older decks Strength and Justice had each other’s places. The deck of 1909 put Strength at eight. The meaning stays the same.

My advice for Strength: Stay calm and stay with it. What frightens you gets smaller when you stop running from it. Breathe slowly, speak softly, and be as kind to yourself as you would be to a scared animal. That kind of strength carries you.

And the meeting? It ends better than you expected. Your boss nods, and you walk out with steady hands. Nobody saw the lion inside you, only the calm you chose.
