The Hanged Man Tarot Card Meaning: Love, Timing, Symbols

At the playground, a little girl hooks her knees over the monkey bars and lets herself hang. Her hair falls toward the wood chips, and she laughs. From down there the whole park looks different. The trees grow down from the sky, and the swings fly upward.

At a glance
  • The Hanged Man shows a pause, and that pause is allowed.
  • In love, feelings cannot be forced right now, and letting go helps more than pulling.
  • For yes or no, the answer is not yet.
  • Things stand still for a while before they move again.
  • Stop pushing and look at the situation from the other side.

The Hanged Man on Pamela Colman Smith’s 1909 card: a man hangs calmly by one foot from a living tree, a golden glow around his head.

Reading the symbols of the Hanged Man

At first glance he looks stuck. Look again and you see a man who is completely at peace.

  • The living tree: He hangs from a wooden beam that still has green leaves on it. This pause is not dead time. Something is quietly growing.
  • The crossed legs: One leg is tied, the other bent behind the knee like the number four. Four means stability. Even upside down, he has found his footing.
  • The hands behind his back: He is not reaching for anything. For once, doing nothing is the right move.
  • The glowing halo: Light shines around his head. When you stop struggling, insight comes on its own.
  • The calm face: No panic, no pain. He has chosen this view, and that makes all the difference.

What the Hanged Man means

This card means a pause. Right now things are not moving forward, and that is okay. Instead of writing the same message for the fifth time, you put your phone down. You ask yourself how the whole thing looks from the other person’s side. Let go of what you are clutching, and the answer appears.

I often say: letting go does not mean forgetting. Letting go means allowing. You stop fighting your feelings and let them be there. That is the stillness this card describes.

The Hanged Man carries the number twelve, which adds up to three, a number of new understanding. His element is Water, soft and patient. On a yes or no question, he says not yet. His shadow side: you hold out far too long and start to feel like a victim. A pause is not a destination. It passes, and right after it comes Death, the card of real change.

The Hanged Man in love

In love readings, this card often shows up when someone is waiting for a text that does not come.

If you are single

You may be between two chapters. Use this time to notice what you really want.

If you are together

Your relationship is on pause, maybe because of distance, stress, or an unspoken question.

If it is over or on hold

Silence after a breakup feels endless. The Hanged Man tells you that this phase has a purpose. The more you try to pull someone back, the further they drift. When you stop pulling, something starts to shift, inside you first.

In a soul connection

For twin flames, this card describes the long waiting phase many women know so well. I explain what happens there in my article on the twin flame connection. With a soulmate, it means taking a breath together.

The Hanged Man as a person, in time, career and money

As a person, he is someone in a holding pattern. Sometimes he sits in his car for ten minutes after getting home, just to think. In love he is patient, sometimes too patient. Before anything moves, he has to let go of something old.

As timing, it means a standstill. Things are delayed, but not cancelled.

In your career, a project is on ice. Use the time to rethink your plan.

With money, wait before you make a big purchase or sign anything.

Combinations with the Hanged Man

  • With Death: The waiting ends because something old is finally released.
  • With The Star: After the pause comes quiet hope. Healing is on its way.
  • With The Lovers: A choice in love needs more time. Do not decide under pressure.
  • With The Chariot: Standstill meets the urge to move. Wait for the right moment, then go.
  • With the Four of Swords: A real rest. Your body and mind need to recharge.
  • With Justice: A decision is pending. A fresh perspective will make it fair.

Common questions about the Hanged Man

Is the Hanged Man a yes or no card?

He usually means not yet. The situation needs time, and pushing will not speed it up. Once you let go a little, things start moving again.

What does the Hanged Man mean in love?

He shows a pause in love. Feelings cannot be forced right now. Letting go and changing your point of view help more than pulling.

How long does the Hanged Man phase last?

There is no fixed number. It lasts until you see the situation in a new way. The cards next to it often show what will end the waiting.

Put the phone down for a day. Lie on your back in the grass if you can, or simply sit by a window and let your thoughts slow down. Ask yourself what this pause is trying to show you. You are not losing time. You are gaining a view you could not have had while running.

After a while the little girl flips back down onto her feet, cheeks pink. She points up at the tallest tree. From upside down she spotted the red kite that got stuck there last summer. Nobody else had noticed it.
