The Moon Tarot Card Meaning: Love, Feelings, Yes or No

You are driving home on a country road late at night, and the fog has rolled in. Your headlights only reach a few yards ahead. At the side of the road, a dark shape seems to move. You slow down to a crawl.

At a glance
  • The Moon brings uncertainty, and you cannot see everything clearly yet.
  • In love, doubts are loud, and something may still be unspoken.
  • For yes or no, it leans no, or more precisely: wait.
  • Things stay unclear for a while before they clear up.
  • Ask before you imagine the worst, and take your gut feeling seriously.
The Moon tarot card, original by Pamela Colman Smith 1909
The Moon from the 1909 deck, as Pamela Colman Smith painted it: a dog and a wolf howl at the moon while a crayfish climbs out of the water.

Reading the symbols of the Moon

This card is full of creatures and half-light. Everything looks a little different than it is.

  • The moon with a face: A quiet face looks down from inside the moon, its eyes half closed. It sees more than it says, just like your intuition.
  • The dog and the wolf: One tame, one wild, both howling. Your calm, sensible side and your fearful, untamed side are speaking at the same time.
  • The crayfish in the pool: It crawls out of the dark water onto land. Old feelings and fears are rising to the surface so you can look at them.
  • The winding path: A narrow path leads between two towers toward distant mountains. You do not see the whole way, only the next stretch.
  • The falling drops: Small drops of light fall from the moon. Even at night, there are signs.

What the Moon means

The Moon means uncertainty. Right now a lot is unclear, and you cannot see the whole picture. Maybe you hear something about yourself at work and do not know if it is true. Old fears get louder. But your intuition is often right. Ask before you imagine the worst.

I have a special bond with this card. I was born on a full moon, on a Monday, the day of the moon. To this day I can hardly sleep in full moon nights, and I dream very intensely. So I know how the moon can stir everything up, and how much it shows you if you listen.

The Moon is number eighteen, which adds up to nine, a number of inner wisdom. Its element is Water, deep and full of feeling. It is closely related to The High Priestess, who also knows things without words. On a yes or no question, the Moon leans no, or more precisely: wait. Its shadow side: you scare yourself with things that only exist in your head. Ask instead of guessing.

The Moon in love

When this card turns up in a love reading, the heart is usually full of questions.

Without a partner

Someone may be sending mixed signals. Do not fill in the blanks with your fears or your dreams. Give it time, and watch what this person does, not only what they say.

With a partner

Something is in the air that has not been said yet. Maybe it is only an old fear of yours, maybe a real question. A calm talk in daylight helps more than a sleepless night.

After a goodbye

Your mind plays tricks on you. One moment you are sure they miss you, the next you are sure they have forgotten you. Be patient with yourself until things become clearer.

Soul connections

In a twin flame or karmic bond, the Moon often shows deep feelings that are hard to put into words. You sense the other person strongly, even from far away. Check your feelings against what is really happening, and be kind to yourself.

The Moon as a person, in time, career and money

As a person, this is someone sensitive and often unsure. After a conversation, they lie awake and go over every word. They pick up on moods right away, and their feelings come and go. Not everything they feel has been said.

As timing, it means unclear. Wait and see.

At work, there may be gossip, confusion or self-doubt. Hold off on big decisions.

With money, read the fine print and double-check before you commit.

The Moon and its card combinations

  • With The Sun: The fog lifts. What was unclear becomes obvious and simple.
  • With The High Priestess: Very strong intuition. Trust what you feel deep down.
  • With The Lovers: Feelings in love are not fully clear yet. Do not rush a choice.
  • With the Seven of Cups: Daydreams and illusions. Keep both feet on the ground.
  • With The Star: Through the darkness, hope is shining. You are on the right path.

Common questions about the Moon

Is the Moon a yes or no card?

The Moon leans no, or more exactly, it asks you to wait. Some things are still hidden, and it is wise to see more clearly before you decide.

What does the Moon mean in love?

It shows uncertainty and doubt. Maybe something has not been said yet. Not everything is the way it looks right now.

What does the Moon say about my intuition?

It shows that your intuition is strong. Take it seriously, and still check it against the facts before you act on it.

When worries grow huge at three in the morning, write them down and leave them on your nightstand. Look at the list again over breakfast. Many fears shrink in daylight. The ones that remain deserve a real question to the right person, not another sleepless night.

The next morning you drive the same road in bright sunshine. The fog is gone, the fields are golden, and the dark shape from last night turns out to be an old mailbox leaning a little to one side.
