Four of Cups Tarot Meaning: Boredom, Missed Chances and Love

Sunday afternoon, the TV is on but you aren’t really watching. A friend texts: want to grab coffee? You type not today before you’ve even thought about it.

At a glance
  • The Four of Cups shows a phase of boredom and pulling back.
  • In love, you may overlook someone because you’re waiting for something else.
  • It leans toward no, at least for now.
  • Things stay still until you look up again.
  • Notice what is being offered to you, not only what is missing.
Four of Cups tarot card, original by Pamela Colman Smith 1909
The Four of Cups in Pamela Colman Smith’s drawing from 1909: a young man sits under a tree while a hand from a cloud holds out a fourth cup.

The signs on the Four of Cups

Very little happens here, and that is exactly what makes the card so honest.

  • The young man in the grass: He sits cross-legged against the tree. He isn’t in trouble, just tired of everything.
  • Crossed arms: This is how he protects himself, and why he can’t take anything in.
  • Three cups in a row: What he already has, and what no longer excites him.
  • The fourth cup from the cloud: A hand floats in with something new. It comes quietly, with no fanfare.
  • Tree and hill: Shade and a wide view. Pulling back is allowed, just look up now and then.

What the Four of Cups means

The Four of Cups describes a lack of drive and a pulling back. Because your eyes are fixed on what’s missing, you miss what’s offered right now. It’s like scrolling through a streaming service for forty minutes and then going to bed without watching anything.

Here feelings have gone flat. Four is the number of stability, four walls, four table legs. But when nothing moves for too long, safety turns into monotony.

On a yes or no question, the card leans toward no. More precisely: not yet. Once you look up, the answer can change.

The shadow side: Withdrawal can slide into self-pity. You say no to everything and later wonder why nobody asks. Be honest: are you resting, or hiding?

The Four of Cups and your heart

In love this card doesn’t mean the end, but it does ask you to wake up a little.

Single: someone is already there

Someone may be interested, and you hardly notice because you’re waiting for the big spark. Look again at the person from your yoga class who always saves you a spot. Not every love starts with fireworks.

In a relationship: routine has crept in

You eat dinner in front of the TV and go to bed at different times. This isn’t a disaster, it’s a signal. Suggest something small and new, like an evening walk without phones.

After a breakup: a gray in-between

This is the numb phase, when nothing seems worth the effort. That’s allowed. Just don’t turn down every offer of comfort. When you’re ready, you’ll see the fourth cup.

The Four of Cups in soul connections

In a twin flame story, the card often shows the runner who refuses what is offered. In a karmic bond, you’re tired of the same old cycle. With a soulmate, it’s a reminder not to take each other for granted. More about that push and pull in my piece on karmic relationships.

The Four of Cups as a person, as timing, at work and with money

As a person, someone withdrawn, a little moody and hard to reach right now.

As a time frame, standstill until you actively change something.

At work, routine and little joy. Other paths exist, but you’ll have to look.

Money-wise, you may miss a good chance because it looks too ordinary.

The Four of Cups with other cards

  • Four and the Ace of Cups: A new feeling knocks, and this time you open the door.
  • Four and the Hermit: Withdrawal you actually need. Take the time.
  • Four and the Seven of Cups: You dream of everything and grab nothing.
  • Four and the Eight of Cups: Boredom becomes the reason to leave.
  • Four and the Star: After a gray time, hope returns slowly.

Common questions about the Four of Cups

Is the Four of Cups a yes or no?

It leans toward no, or rather toward not yet. Once you notice what’s offered, things can move.

What does the Four of Cups mean in love?

Boredom, distance or a missed chance. Often someone is interested and you haven’t noticed.

How does someone feel when the Four of Cups shows up?

Tired, closed off and unsatisfied, more about their inner state than about you.

Look at what life is offering you right now, instead of only at what is missing. One small yes to a walk, a call or an invitation can be enough to get things flowing again.

An hour later you pick the phone back up and write: actually, is coffee still on? Ten minutes later you’re putting on your shoes, and the afternoon feels different.
