The Hermit Tarot Card: Meaning in Love, Feelings and Yes or No
You cancel the dinner plans and feel a tiny bit guilty about it. Then you make tea, put on warm socks and sit by the window while the evening grows dark. No phone, no noise. After an hour, a thought you have been chasing for weeks finally sits still long enough for you to see it.
- The Hermit stands for retreat, quiet and finding your own answer.
- In love, he speaks of time for yourself or a little distance.
- To a yes or no question, he says: not yet, take your time first.
- His timing is slow, and first comes the pulling back.
- Give yourself the quiet you need, then reach out again.

Looking closely at the Hermit
- The lantern: He holds up a lantern with a six pointed star inside. Its light doesn’t reach far, only to the next step. That’s enough.
- The grey cloak: Plain and hooded. He doesn’t need attention. He wraps himself in quiet.
- The staff: A long wooden staff supports him. Experience and patience keep him steady.
- The snowy peak: He stands high up, alone, in the cold. He has climbed far away from the noise to see more clearly.
- His lowered eyes: He looks down, toward the path and toward his own heart. The answers are within.
- The dark blue sky: Night or dusk. It’s a time for reflection, not for action.
What the Hermit means
The Hermit is the card of retreat. You need quiet for yourself right now. Maybe you skip a party because you first want to sort out what you really want. That isn’t a step backward. It’s how you find your answer, and once you have it, you will turn back toward the people around you.
His key words are retreat, rest, reflection and solitude. He carries the number nine, the last single digit, a number of completion and of looking back before something new begins. His element is earth, quiet and grounded. To a yes or no question, the Hermit doesn’t give a quick yes. He says: not yet, take time and then decide. His partner in stillness is the High Priestess: she listens, he searches.
His shadow side: you pull back out of fear and stay alone too long. Rest is a pause, not a permanent home.
The Hermit in love
In love, the Hermit asks for patience, with the other person and with yourself.
If you’re single
This may be a season to enjoy your own company. Not every phase of life is for dating. When you know clearly what your heart wants, you will recognize the right person much faster.
If you’re in a relationship
One of you may need space. That doesn’t automatically mean the love is gone. Give room without disappearing completely. A short message like “I’m thinking of you, take your time” can mean a lot.
After a breakup
After a breakup, the Hermit gives you permission to step back. You don’t have to explain yourself to everyone or go out every weekend. Stay with yourself for a while. In the quiet you notice what you really need next time.
In soul connections
With a twin flame, the Hermit often shows the phase in which one person pulls back. It hurts, and it often belongs to the process. I explain why in my article on the twin flame. With a soulmate, he describes two people who can be quiet together without feeling lonely. In a karmic bond, he says: step away for a while and see the pattern clearly.
The Hermit as someone you know, and in time, work and money
As a person: someone who needs quiet and time alone. In the evening their phone is often silent, and an answer may come hours later. They love deeply and loyally, but first they need to sort out what they feel.
As timing: slow. First retreat, then clarity.
At work: learning, going deeper, working behind the scenes. Not a time for big appearances, but for careful work in peace.
With money: save rather than spend. Sleep on a purchase before you make it.
The Hermit in a spread with other cards
- The Hermit and the High Priestess: Deep inner work. Your answer comes in silence.
- The Hermit and the Four of Swords: Real rest is needed, maybe a break from work or from screens.
- The Hermit and the Two of Cups: Someone needs time before they can open up to you.
- The Hermit and the Star: After a quiet time, hope returns.
- The Hermit and the Eight of Cups: You walk away from something to find what you really want.
Questions people ask about the Hermit
Is the Hermit a yes or no card?
The Hermit means not yet. Take time to think first. The answer will come once you are clear.
What does the Hermit mean in love?
He shows a time of distance or reflection. Someone needs space to understand their feelings, which doesn’t have to mean the end.
What does the Hermit mean as someone’s feelings?
The person feels deeply but is still sorting it out. They need quiet before they can say what is going on inside them.
My advice for the Hermit: Take the quiet you need without apologizing for it. Turn off notifications for an evening, go for a walk alone, write down your thoughts. And when you see more clearly, reach out again. Your light is meant to be shared, just not before it’s ready.
And that thought at the window? You write it down before you go to bed. Tonight it belongs only to you, and that’s okay.

I know what waiting feels like, so I walk with you from waiting to choosing, honestly and without empty promises. I work with tarot, Lenormand, astrology and numerology.
